Sustainment and tooling are where the real innovation is happening
Welcome back to The Prepreg Brief. July’s headlines weren’t dominated by a single program milestone — instead, the interesting movement was underneath, in how the industry is repairing, tooling, and qualifying composite structures faster than before.
The U.S. Navy is putting 3D-printed composite repair capability directly into the hands of fleet sailors, aiming to cut F/A-18 downtime in half. Northrop’s YFQ-48A Talon uncrewed combat aircraft program is leaning on dedicated composite tooling partners as it moves toward full-scale production, and a new hot-press tooling platform aimed squarely at defense and aerospace lead-time compression was announced this month. On the demand side, ArianeGroup locked in long-term CFRP payload fairing supply as Ariane 6 ramps toward nine to ten missions a year — a reminder that OEMs are still planning multi-year composite capacity even when spot headlines are quiet. Underneath all of it, PAN precursor and aerospace-grade fiber costs remain elevated, and we’re seeing more supplier interest in recycled-carbon-fiber routes as one way to manage that pressure.

ArianeGroup locks in long-term CFRP fairing supply from Beyond Gravity
ArianeGroup has secured a long-term supply agreement with Beyond Gravity for carbon-fiber-reinforced payload fairings supporting Ariane 6, with twenty-seven fairings on order as the program ramps toward nine to ten missions per year. The deal is a reminder that European space programs are locking in composite structural supply well ahead of cadence increases — a pattern worth watching as OEMs plan multi-year capacity.

Composite tooling keeps pace with Northrop’s Blue Wingman program
Touchstone Advanced Composites Tooling & Fabrication is supporting Northrop Grumman’s YFQ-48A Talon — the U.S. Air Force’s “Blue Wingman” collaborative combat aircraft — with dedicated composite tooling as the program moves toward full-scale production. Fast, adaptable tooling is emerging as a bottleneck for uncrewed combat platforms racing from prototype to rate production; a new hot-press tooling platform aimed at exactly this problem (Massivit’s RapidWings) was also announced this month.

For a sustainment community that has long relied on depot-level composite repair, pushing capability to the flight line is a meaningful shift — and one worth watching as a template for other platforms.

Curve Works wins classification approval for 3D-printed composite marine structures
Curve Works has received Approval in Principle from Bureau Veritas for composite parts produced via its reconfigurable-mold process, covering primary load-bearing maritime and shipbuilding construction. Classification-society sign-off is typically the gating step before yards commit to a new build process at scale — a milestone worth tracking for anyone evaluating additive or reconfigurable tooling routes for marine composite structures.

One resin family, two cure paths — from prototype runs to high-volume series
Our AEP 55 epoxy prepreg platform is built for versatility: good drapability, controlled resin flow, and a clean 120°C cure in either vacuum-bag-only (out-of-autoclave) or autoclave cycles, with a DMA Tg in the 126–136°C range and a six-week shelf life at room temperature. That combination makes it a working solution across automotive lightweight components, marine hulls and decks, wind blades, and sports and leisure goods such as bicycle frames — wherever a part needs autoclave-grade properties without being locked into autoclave-only processing.
AEP 55-2 takes the same resin family and re-tunes it for hot-press, compression-molding production: a 150°C, 15-minute press cycle replaces the 90–120 minute autoclave or oven schedule, and the faster-curing formulation lifts DMA Tg to 136–153°C. It’s the grade we point customers to as they move from prototype or low-rate builds — including structural components for UAV/drone platforms — toward high-volume series production, where cycle time, not autoclave capacity, is the constraint. Because both grades share a chemistry family, qualification data and processing know-how carry across as a program scales up.

PAN precursor & aerospace-grade fiber — tightness persists
The upstream pressure we flagged in our May and June issues hasn’t unwound. Acrylonitrile and PAN precursor costs remain elevated relative to last year, and aerospace-grade fiber capacity is, if anything, tighter: OEM aerostructure expansions announced this month — including a new 40,000 m² facility adding automated tape-laying, fiber placement, and pick-and-place capacity — point to sustained multi-year demand rather than a short cycle. In parallel, we’re seeing more supplier interest in recycled-carbon-fiber routes: a joint Chinese-UK program demonstrated a continuous recycled-fiber process aimed at lower-cost, lower-carbon CFRP this month — a sign the industry is looking for cost relief wherever it can find it.

A measured, predictable framework — rather than ad-hoc surcharges — continues to look like the direction most prepreg suppliers and converters are converging on.

|
Quartz-reinforced cyanate ester prepreg: built for RF-transparent, high-temperature structures
Our HTCE-02 cyanate ester resin system was engineered specifically for applications where electrical performance matters as much as mechanical performance: radomes, antennas, and reflector structures, plus high-temperature structural components where dielectric behavior can’t be an afterthought. At 12 GHz, the neat resin shows a dielectric constant of 2.9 and a dissipation factor of 0.006, with water uptake of just 1.6% after two hours at 125°C — low enough to keep RF performance stable in service.
Thermally, DMA testing shows a Tg onset of 288°C, with loss and tan-delta points at 301°C and 306°C — these levels are achieved with a free-standing post-cure at 250°C. This matters for high-temperature flight control surfaces and satellite structural elements that see repeated thermal cycling. The system is compatible with both out-of-autoclave and autoclave processing, so the cure path can follow the part rather than the other way around.

Outlook — next 30 days
Demand signals across aerospace, defense, and marine remain firm — from Ariane 6 fairing lock-ins to the Blue Wingman tooling ramp-up. Structural composite capacity, not raw demand, looks like the binding constraint across the value chain. On our side, the AEP 55 / AEP 55-2 platform gives customers a path to scale from prototype to series without a full requalification cycle.

Regulatory watch
EU Regulation 2021/821 (dual-use) export licensing remains the operational friction point for European-origin feedstock. Carbon fiber’s designation as a strategic material under the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act continues to be worth tracking for medium-term sourcing strategy.
